Janice Poe

Head of English Department

Hello, my name is Janice Poe, and I’ve considered myself a teacher for 5 years. I specialize in teaching English to elementary-aged children and business-level English to adults. Before joining Genius Academy, I spent a few years in Taiwan teaching at the Kojen afterschool program and later handling private one-on-one students, many that I still keep to this day.

My love for teaching started during a summer in high school where I took a government-sponsored trip to teach elementary students in rural Taiwan. The impact I saw in these kids in turn affected me. I marveled at the ingenuity of these kids, and it delighted me to how they faced the challenges I laid before them.

My journey as a teacher continued in college where I spent a year in the Jumpstart teaching program in Chicago. There I learned the importance of laying the ground-work within a classroom. How good learning started on a foundation of respect and openness. And of course, fun! I eventually finished with a degree in English Literature at the University of Texas at Austin with a minor in International Business.

When I’m not thinking of ways to have fun in class, I find many other ways to enjoy my time. I greatly enjoy cooking, playing ping pong and the drums, and diving a bit too deep into the movies and shows I watch.
